Moving to a new, more reasonably sized location, Alternative Party 2013 made much more sense this time around.. The place wasn’t exactly packed and I missed most of the party, but everyone I got to speak with weren’t expressing dissatisfaction towards the organizing etc.. So I guess it was a success :)
Compo entry -wise, I initially started working on an entry for the ICU Rave Music compo, perhaps also to be used for a single release. That song however didn’t seem to be going where I wanted so I dropped it and started from scratch on thursday (a day before the party, eek!).. This time targetting Wild compo instead!
The concept: Limit yourself to a few pieces of gear and make something fun with them.
For the gear, I had a Bontempi Junior 4 Electric Organ model 258, a Sherman Filterbank 2 and a Shure SM7B microphone. In this setup, the Bontempi became the “oscillator” and Filterbank “the rest” of a synthesizer.. SM7B was of course needed to mic up the Bontempi.
Despite the front panel reads “electric organ” the Bontempi is actually of the mechanical reed variety; the only thing electric is the motor which blows air to the reeds. This means that besides the musical notes, you get a constant engine & air hum miking up the instrument. Lovely.
So I recorded video & audio of myself playing all the stem tracks needed, adjusting the Filterbank settings as I went along. I then used these stems to assemble the full song, applying some gating, EQing and compression where needed. Using the recordings without any treatments would’ve just resulted with a horrible stack of that motor noise :)
The Alternative Party rules also stated that you get extra points for including something “hospital” into your entry so yeah, why not!
